The Symposium for Research Collaboration

November 14 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Associate Professor Dr. Noppol Arunrat, Deputy Dean for Research and Academic Services, and Lecturer Dr. Praewa Wongburi, Assistant to the Dean for Policy, Planning, and International Relations, along with Assistant Professor Dr. Piyakarn Teartisup and Lecturer Dr. Jakkapon Phanthuwongpakdee from the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University, shared their experiences in research operations that included insights into the expertise of faculty members, with Associate Prof. Dr. Park Jongkwan, Head of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Professor Dr. Moon Byung-hyun, Professor Dr. Kim Tae-hyeung, and Assistant Prof. Dr. Lee Jongkeun from Changwon National University (CWNU), South Korea, in the activitiy entitled "The Symposium for Research Collaboration", with the objective of exploring potential avenues for joint research on various topics, such as environmental problem management, waste-related issues, water and air pollution, wetlands, and energy. MUEN Received Delegates from Changwon National University, South Korea

November 13, 2023, at 2:30 p.m., Associate Professor Dr. Kitikorn Charmondusit, the Dean, and Assistant Professor Dr. Kritana Prueksakorn of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University received Associate Prof. Dr. Park Jongkwan, the Head of the Department of Environmental Engineering, along with Professor Dr. Moon Byung-hyun, Professor Dr. Kim Tae-hyeung, and Assistant Prof. Dr. Lee Jongkeun from Changwon National University (CWNU), South Korea, on the occasion of their visit to Thailand from November 13 to 15, 2023, with the purpose of discussing cooperation in research and academics, including meetings with faculty members to exchange research information and introduce the Department of Environmental Engineering to students interested in pursuing graduate studies at Changwon National University.
During the meeting, there was an exchange of information about the overview of academic operations, including teaching, research, and academic services. The expertise of academic personnel was discussed before exploring ways to develop research collaborations on topics that align with the expertise of faculty members from both institutions. These topics include fields of study with the potential for joint research in the future, such as green energy, water quality, air quality, and carbon capture technology (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage: CCUS), Climate Change and Net Zero (CN) Platform, as well as research on other topics related to sustainable development.
Additionally, the possibility of developing other academic activities, such as student and personnel inbound-and-outbound exchange programs, was discussed. Notably, the preparation of a memorandum of understanding between the two institutions was also addressed.
The meeting took place in conference room 1215, at the Dean's Office, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University.

Welcome to Professor Dr. Melissa E. Lenczewski, Director of the Institute for the Study of Environment, Sustainability, and Energy at Northern Illinois University, United States

On October 16, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., Associate Professor Dr. Kitikorn Charmondusit, the Dean, in the company of Associate Professor Dr. Noppol Arunrat, the Deputy Dean for Research and Academic Services, and Lecturer Dr. Praewa Wongburi, the Assistant to the Dean for Policy, Planning, and International Relations, the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, had the honor of extending a warm welcome to Professor Dr. Melissa E. Lenczewski, Director of the Institute for the Study of Environment, Sustainability, and Energy at Northern Illinois University, United States, on the occasion of her visit to Thailand, to follow up on the research collaborations with faculty members as a recipient of the ASEAN Fulbright Research Scholar scholarship. The focus of this research will revolve around issues related to "Contaminants in groundwater in relation to urban expansion and tourism."
During the meeting, Associate Professor Kitikorn and Professor Lenczewski engaged in comprehensive discussions concerning the proposed research endeavors. This included deliberations on the blueprint for future research initiatives, particularly in the realm of environmental concerns, such as groundwater contamination in industrial areas. Furthermore, the dialogue encompassed the integration of environmental science with health science and the development of a curriculum designed to accommodate the evolving labor market, ensuring that recent graduates remain aligned with global trends, with a specific emphasis on issues linked to environmental sustainability.The meeting also paved the way for the formulation of collaborative research strategies and the planning of diverse academic activities aimed at fostering an enriched academic environment.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Northern Illinois University

On September 27, 2023, Associate Professor Dr. Sura Pattanakiat, the Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University in Thailand, and Professor Laurie Elish-Piper, the Interim Executive Vice President and Provost at Northern Illinois University in the USA, formally entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU establishes a collaborative framework between the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University and Northern Illinois University, aimed at facilitating and enhancing academic information exchange activities.

The collaboration entails the exchange of visiting faculty, students, and support personnel between both institutions. In this capacity, Associate Professor Dr. Rattanawat Chaiyarat, the Director of the Bachelor of Science Program in Natural Resources and Environmental Management (International Program), and Professor Kerry Wilks, the Associate Vice President in the Division of International Affairs, also signed the MoU as witnesses.

This academic partnership is effectively coordinated by Professor Melissa E. Lenczewski from the Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy within the Earth, Atmosphere, and Environment, together with Assistant Professor Dr. Achara Ussawarujikulchai, who serves as the Director of the Master of Science Program in Technology of Environmental Management (Special Program), and Lecturer Dr. Praewa Wongburi, a faculty member.


Warm welcome to a delegation from Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University, People's Republic of China

August 29, 2023, at 10:00 hrs., Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sura Pattanakiat, Dean, accompanied by Asst. Prof. Dr. Pattaraporn Posoknistakul, Deputy Dean for International Relations and Special Affairs of the Faculty of Engineering, Asst. Prof. Dr. Allan Sriratana Tabucanon, Assistant to the Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noppol Arunrat, Assistant to the Dean for Policy, Planning, and Knowledge Management, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Thamarat Phutthai, Assistant to the Dean for Student Affairs and Special Events, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, along with Ms. Wanpimon Senapadpakorn, Director of the Division of International Relations at Mahidol University, extended a warm welcome to a delegation from Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University, People's Republic of China, led by Prof. Zuo Jiane, Associate Dean, along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zhenyuan Yin from the Institute for Ocean Engineering, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Jong Mui Choo.

The visit was intended to introduce the educational and research activities of Tsinghua University's Beijing Main Campus and Shenzhen Campus, and to engage in discussions about fostering collaborative networks at both the faculty and university levels across various disciplines, which encompassed a range of topics, including participation in summer student exchange programs, personnel exchanges, academic conferences, and the creation of a joint curriculum at the graduate level. Cooperation agreements were also considered at both the faculty and university levels. This visit was part of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University's mission to visit universities in Southeast Asia, with the aim of expanding its cooperative endeavors with international partners. The goal was to explore interdisciplinary approaches that would address the challenges of creating and advancing knowledge on a global scale.

The meeting took place in Meeting Room 531 at the Office of the President at Mahidol University, coordinated by Mahidol University’s International Affairs Division and Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies.


Welcome a courtesy visit from Ms. Dima Al-Khatib, UNOSSC Director, and Ms. Yejin Kim, Project Manager, from United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC)

August 24, 2023, 13.30 hrs., Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nathsuda Pumijumnong, Director of the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Environment and Resource Studies (International Program), Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University, and also the Training Program Director for the international training course on “Adapting to Climate Change: Facing the Consequence,” represented the Dean of the Faculty, to welcome a courtesy visit from Ms. Dima Al-Khatib, UNOSSC Director, and Ms. Yejin Kim, Project Manager, from United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC). This visit was a follow-up on the outcomes of the aforementioned training course, which was held virtually from May 9-25, 2023, with support from Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and Perez-Guerrero Trust Fund (PGTF), and to discuss potential collaborative opportunities for enhancing capacity-building initiatives between the faculty and the network of countries involved in UNOSSC projects. The scope of collaboration may include further research cooperation, training activities, and funding for upcoming training projects.

The meeting took place at Meeting Room 4, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University. Following the bilateral discussions, the visitors had the opportunity to explore the Sireeruckhachati Nature Learning Park and the campus surroundings. This exploration aimed to provide insights into the university's efforts to become an environmentally conscious institution, promoting green practices, and aligning with the sustainable development goals.
