August 29, 2023, at 10:00 hrs., Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sura Pattanakiat, Dean, accompanied by Asst. Prof. Dr. Pattaraporn Posoknistakul, Deputy Dean for International Relations and Special Affairs of the Faculty of Engineering, Asst. Prof. Dr. Allan Sriratana Tabucanon, Assistant to the Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noppol Arunrat, Assistant to the Dean for Policy, Planning, and Knowledge Management, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Thamarat Phutthai, Assistant to the Dean for Student Affairs and Special Events, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, along with Ms. Wanpimon Senapadpakorn, Director of the Division of International Relations at Mahidol University, extended a warm welcome to a delegation from Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University, People's Republic of China, led by Prof. Zuo Jiane, Associate Dean, along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zhenyuan Yin from the Institute for Ocean Engineering, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Jong Mui Choo.

The visit was intended to introduce the educational and research activities of Tsinghua University's Beijing Main Campus and Shenzhen Campus, and to engage in discussions about fostering collaborative networks at both the faculty and university levels across various disciplines, which encompassed a range of topics, including participation in summer student exchange programs, personnel exchanges, academic conferences, and the creation of a joint curriculum at the graduate level. Cooperation agreements were also considered at both the faculty and university levels. This visit was part of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University's mission to visit universities in Southeast Asia, with the aim of expanding its cooperative endeavors with international partners. The goal was to explore interdisciplinary approaches that would address the challenges of creating and advancing knowledge on a global scale.

The meeting took place in Meeting Room 531 at the Office of the President at Mahidol University, coordinated by Mahidol University’s International Affairs Division and Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies.


Welcome a courtesy visit from Ms. Dima Al-Khatib, UNOSSC Director, and Ms. Yejin Kim, Project Manager, from United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC)

August 24, 2023, 13.30 hrs., Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nathsuda Pumijumnong, Director of the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Environment and Resource Studies (International Program), Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University, and also the Training Program Director for the international training course on “Adapting to Climate Change: Facing the Consequence,” represented the Dean of the Faculty, to welcome a courtesy visit from Ms. Dima Al-Khatib, UNOSSC Director, and Ms. Yejin Kim, Project Manager, from United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC). This visit was a follow-up on the outcomes of the aforementioned training course, which was held virtually from May 9-25, 2023, with support from Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and Perez-Guerrero Trust Fund (PGTF), and to discuss potential collaborative opportunities for enhancing capacity-building initiatives between the faculty and the network of countries involved in UNOSSC projects. The scope of collaboration may include further research cooperation, training activities, and funding for upcoming training projects.

The meeting took place at Meeting Room 4, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University. Following the bilateral discussions, the visitors had the opportunity to explore the Sireeruckhachati Nature Learning Park and the campus surroundings. This exploration aimed to provide insights into the university's efforts to become an environmentally conscious institution, promoting green practices, and aligning with the sustainable development goals.


Certificates Presentation and Closing Ceremonies of the "Transdisciplinary Summer School on the Environment"

August 25, 2023, Associate Professor Dr. Sura Pattanakiat, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University, along with Professor Dr. Jiro Okada, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Science at Nagasaki University, conveyed their congratulations to the students at the certificates presentation and closing ceremonies of the "Transdisciplinary Summer School on the Environment," which took place from July 3 to August 25, 2023, structured as a blend of online instruction and a scientific laboratory internship, including fieldwork at Nagasaki University in Japan.


During the ceremony, the "Award of Excellence for Best Presentation" was given to a student group that delivered outstanding work on August 24, 2023, on the subject entitled "Environmental Pollution from Agricultural Activities." The group consisted of Ms. Sonya Jäppinen and Mr. Poppoom Rimsithiwongso from the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University, Mr. Nicholas Gibbons, a student of Earth and Environmental Science at Lancaster University, UK, and Ms. Ririka Kitamura, Ms. Misato Fujimura, and Miss Nanoko Taira, students of the Faculty of Environmental Science at Nagasaki University, Japan.


MUEN signed an extension of the MoC with Nagasaki University

On August 24, 2023, Associate Professor Dr. Sura Pattanakiat, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, participated in the presentations given by students from the Bachelor of Science Program (B.Sc.) in Natural Resources and Environmental Management (International Program) and the Bachelor of Science Program in Environmental Science and Technology (ES). The event showcased a diverse range of topics, after the field trips, as part of the "Transdisciplinary Summer School on the Environment" project, such as E-waste management in Thailand, the UK, and Japan; environmental issues affecting endemic species on Tsushima Island; environmental pollution arising from agricultural activities; illegal dumping of construction waste in Japan; and concerns surrounding Environmental Issues and Sustainability. This session involved collaboration among students from the Faculty of Environmental Science at Nagasaki University, Japan, and students from the Earth and Environmental Science Program at Lancaster University, UK. The initiative was jointly organized by the Faculty of Environmental Science and the Asian Environmental Resilience Research Center (AERRC) at Nagasaki University, Japan. Its purpose was to offer 3rd year undergraduate students from universities worldwide, including Japan, the opportunity to engage in problem-based learning (PBL), combining online teaching, laboratory training, and fieldwork at Nagasaki University and Mahidol University.

Additionally, on August 23, Associate Professor Dr. Sura also attended a discussion with Professor Yujing Jiang, Vice President for International Exchange, about enhancing collaboration networks for personnel exchange and joint research on various topics. Following the discussion, he also signed a memorandum of cooperation to extend the period of academic cooperation in research, student exchange, and the organization of academic conferences and workshops with Nagasaki University for an additional 5 years. This collaborative effort was led by Professor Dr. Kodo Umakoshi, Director of the Asian Environmental Resilience Research Center, and Professor Dr. Jiro Okada, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Science. The signing ceremony was also attended by Prof. Tetsuji Muto, Vice Dean of the Graduate School, Prof. Minoru Wada, Vice Dean of the Graduate School, Prof. Yuji Takao, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Science, and Prof. Dr. Hideki Nakayama

August 15, 2023 at 9:00 a.m., Associate Professor Dr. Sura Pattanakiat, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University, alongside Assistant Professor Dr. Allan Sriratana Tabucanon, the Assistant to the Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations, and Lecturer Assistant Andaman Chankao, along with the faculty staff, extended a warm welcome to Professor Dr. Hideki NAKAYAMA from the Faculty of Environmental Science at Nagasaki University, Japan, on the occasion of his visit to the faculty for a meeting to explore the potential expansion of collaborative efforts between the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies and the Faculty of Environmental Science, as well as other relevant departments at Nagasaki University, the particular interest of which was the collaboration with the Asian Environmental Resilience Research Center (AERRC) and the Graduate School of Fisheries and Environmental Sciences. The aim is to establish initiatives involving student internships, personnel exchange programs, joint research projects, and the pursuit of funding opportunities. Additionally, discussions focused on selecting faculty members to partake in the Doctor of Philosophy Program at Nagasaki University, supported by the Japanese Government's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Associate Professor Dr. Sura and Professor NAKAYAMA also discussed the particulars of an upcoming visit to Nagasaki University, during which they intend to finalize an agreement to extend the collaboration between the two institutions as well as other preparations for his attendance at the "Transdisciplinary Summer School on the Environment" students' project presentations, scheduled to take place at Nagasaki University from August 23-26, 2023.


Sustainable Waste Management in a Circular Economy

August 7, 2023, 12.00 hrs., Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sura Pattanakiat, Dean of Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, presided over and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the international training course on “Sustainable Waste Management in a Circular Economy”, virtually organized via Zoom from August 7-23, 2023, in which Lieutenant Sorawud Preededilok, Minister attached to Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), also delivered a welcome speech to the participants.

The training is organized to introduce the concepts and principles knowledge of municipal solid waste management and treatment technologies as well as apply the concept of circular economy and sufficiency economy through waste management, which can be effectively adopted in the home countries of 45 trainees representing environmental public sector organizations and government departments around the world. The training is organized with support from Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Achara Ussawarujikulchai, Director of Master of Science Program in Technology of Environmental Management (Special Program), Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University as the Training Program Director.
