🌱 Mahidol University's Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies Hosts "Initiation of Carbon Neutrality in Campuses and Schools" Seminar 🌍, Launches New "Go Neutrality" Campaign Towards Carbon Neutrality in Educational Institutions 🚀
On August 29, 2024, from 09:00 to 11:30 AM, the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, organized a seminar titled “Initiation of Carbon Neutrality in Campuses and Schools.” The seminar aimed to bring together experts, administrators, educators, students, and other stakeholders to discuss and promote awareness and cooperation among Thai educational institutions towards achieving carbon neutrality and zero greenhouse gas emissions in schools and educational institutions. The event was officially opened by Assistant Professor Dr. Athisarn Wayuparb, Acting Vice President for Strategies, Planning, and Budgeting, Mahidol University, who delivered the opening speech and welcomed the participants. Associate Professor Dr. Kitikorn Charmondusit, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, also addressed the background and objectives of the seminar.
The seminar on “Initiation of Carbon Neutrality in Campuses and Schools” was divided into two sessions. The first session focused on “Policies and Strategies for Carbon Neutrality in Educational Institutions,” with the participation of experts and representatives from various organizations, including Ms. Hitomi Rankine, Chief of the Environment and Development Policy Section at UNESCAP, Ms. Chomphoo Kaewprasert, a representative from the Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE), Dr. Natarika Wayuparb Nitiphon, Deputy Executive Director, Acting Executive Director of the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO), and Assistant Professor Dr. Krissachai Sriboonma, Vice President for Sustainability-Oriented University Affairs Promotion at King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB) and Chairperson of the Sustainable University Network (SUN) Thailand. Dr. Jakkapon Phanthuwongpakdee, a faculty member from the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, served as the moderator for the first session.
In the second session, speakers from higher education institutions and schools participated in discussions and presentations on carbon reduction activities in educational institutions. The speakers included Ms. Sasivimon Pungpermtrakul, Head of Sustainable Development Officer at Division of Physical Systems and Environment, Mahidol University, Mr. Padet Plengplang, Director of Samut Sakhon Community College, Master Khemmapas Jadkon, Environmental Coordinator at Assumption College Thonburi, and Ms. Petchomphoo Pichphandaycha, a senior teacher at Nawaminthrachinuthit Satriwitthaya Phutthamonthon School. Associate Professor Dr. Noppon Arunrat, Deputy Dean for Research and Academic Services, served as the moderator for this session.
Additionally, during the seminar, the new “Go Neutrality” campaign was introduced, inviting educational institutions and interested individuals to commit to achieving carbon neutrality. This initiative aims to lay the foundation for empowering the next generation with sustainable knowledge and skills. The seminar “Initiation of Carbon Neutrality in Campuses and Schools” is part of the “Carbon Neutrality Campus” project, a collaborative international project for academic exchange and development of a Joint Unit on “Carbon Neutrality Campus” in partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). This project is funded by Mahidol University and primarily aims to gather and disseminate knowledge about carbon neutrality, organize seminars, and provide training to equip Thai educational institutions with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve carbon neutrality and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The seminar took place at the Chitralada Conference Room, S.D. Avenue Hotel, Bangkok, and was attended by over 90 participants, including experts from various organizations, administrators, and personnel from schools and educational institutions, students, and the general public.
