ENVI Mahidol, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, led by Associate Professor Dr. Kitikorn Charmondusit, Dean, and Assistant Professor Dr. Allan Sriratana Tabucanon, Deputy Dean for Education and International Relations, held a meeting with Professor Dr. Zhang Jiutian, Executive Director of the Green Development Institute, Beijing Normal University, together with Associate Professor Dr. Song Xiangjing of the Green Development Institute, to support the mission of strengthening China–ASEAN cooperation on low-carbon development in 2026.
The discussion focused on advancing academic and research collaboration, with the aim of identifying opportunities for joint projects by integrating China’s strengths in low-carbon technologies, green development models, and industrial experience with the capacities of Thailand and ASEAN countries.
The meeting explored potential areas of future cooperation, including renewable energy, greenhouse gas emission reduction, carbon management, and technology transfer. Both sides also exchanged information on their respective expertise and experience. The Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, highlighted its strong multidisciplinary expertise covering natural resources, environment, energy, environmental economics, greenhouse gases, pollution, health, and waste management, along with its missions in education, research, and international academic services.
In addition, the meeting reviewed the Faculty’s international collaboration network, which includes partnerships with universities and organizations across multiple regions, as well as the Carbon Neutrality Campus Platform jointly implemented with UNESCAP and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, involving more than 15 universities from ASEAN and other countries. At the same time, the Chinese side shared insights into China’s carbon policy and strategic direction, which is transitioning toward a systematic control of carbon dioxide emissions under the 15th Five-Year Plan, with a strong emphasis on low-carbon and zero-emission industrial parks.
Regarding the role of the Green Development Institute, established in 2018, the institute serves as a key platform for green development, carbon management, and climate policy, working closely with government agencies, industry, and the financial sector.
The meeting concluded with a shared view that initiating cooperation through pilot projects in industrial estates would provide a concrete and scalable approach, enabling both policy-level and practical implementation at the regional level. There is also strong potential for further development of joint projects, applications for government funding, and the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for academic cooperation between institutions in the future.
The meeting was coordinated by the Global Partnerships Division, Mahidol University, as the main coordinating body.
