On 9 February 2026, the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, hosted the international seminar “2026 Carbon Neutrality Campus (CNC) Seminar” under the theme “Carbon Neutrality in Action: Regional Insights, Local Innovations – From Campus to City: Shaping a Sustainable Future Together.”
The seminar was co-organized with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the National Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy Council Office (NXPO), with the aim of strengthening the role of higher education institutions and youth in advancing carbon neutrality and achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
At the opening ceremony, Professor Dr. Napharenu Sajjarak Theerathiti, Vice President for International Relations and University Council, Mahidol University, highlighted the University’s policy commitment to promoting international collaboration and joint initiatives that connect knowledge, research, and practical implementation of carbon neutrality at the regional level.
Associate Professor Dr. Kitikorn Charmondusit, Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, emphasized the role of the Carbon Neutrality Campus (CNC) initiative as a collaborative platform linking universities, schools, government agencies, and international organizations to drive tangible actions for greenhouse gas emission reduction. The initiative is supported by Mahidol University through the Joint Unit funding scheme for international collaboration development.
Dr. Surachai Satitkunarat, Director of the National Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy Council Office (NXPO), shared policy perspectives on the role of educational institutions in supporting national carbon neutrality and net zero targets. He stressed the importance of aligning academic work with national policy frameworks to ensure long-term, scalable outcomes.
In addition, Dr. Sangmin Nam, Director of the Environment and Development Division, UNESCAP, underscored the significance of regional cooperation in the Asia–Pacific region and the role of university networks as living laboratories for climate policy experimentation and innovation. He noted that the CNC platform enables youth and educational institutions to take a proactive role in driving the transition toward a low-carbon society.
The seminar welcomed participants from across the Asia–Pacific region, including Thailand, China, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Nepal, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and the Philippines, attending both onsite and online. This strong participation reflected regional collaboration in knowledge exchange, best practices, and the co-design of solutions to address climate change.
One of the key highlights of the event was the active engagement of youth and school networks. A total of 16 schools participated, with 10 schools presenting project outcomes focused on greenhouse gas emission reduction and environmental innovation. This showcased the role of young people as “agents of change,” not merely learners.
Throughout the day, the seminar featured keynote lectures, high-level policy dialogues, expert roundtable discussions, and student project presentations, all emphasizing the linkage from universities to cities and communities to advance a sustainable low-carbon transition.
The 2026 Carbon Neutrality Campus Seminar marked another significant milestone for Mahidol University in elevating the role of Thai higher education institutions on the international stage, reaffirming that the power of the younger generation is central to achieving carbon neutrality and net zero goals in the future.
