ENVI Mahidol Hosts “Salaya Children’s University,” Inspiring Young Learners to Transform Waste into Natural Colors for a Low-Carbon World

On September 4, 2026, Associate Professor Dr. Noppol Arunrat, Deputy Dean for Research and Academic Services, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, presided over the opening of the One Mahidol One Tambon project, “Salaya Children’s University,” under the theme “Little Creators: Turning Waste into Natural Colors for a Low-Carbon World.” The activity was held at the Professor (Special) Lek Moncharoen Conference Room (4218), 2nd Floor, Badhanatala Environment Building, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University.

The activity welcomed 30 Grade 3 students, accompanied by teachers from Phra Tamnak Suankularb Mahamongkol School. The students participated enthusiastically in a hands-on learning experience led by Assistant Professor Dr. Witchaya Rongsayamanont, Assistant Professor Dr. Piangjai Peerakiatkhajohn, and Dr. Praewa Wongburi, who served as co-lecturers and activity facilitators throughout the program.

The One Mahidol One Tambon project is an important mission of Mahidol University aimed at bringing scientific and environmental knowledge to local communities to promote learning and sustainable development. This activity focused on building a foundation of environmental knowledge among young learners through experiential learning and hands-on activities, while fostering awareness of the importance of resource efficiency and reducing environmental impacts.

The “Little Creators” activity provided the students with an opportunity to take on the roles of young scientists and creative thinkers. The lecturers introduced them to the process of transforming readily available materials and household organic waste, such as vegetable scraps, fruits, and tree bark, into natural colors for creating artwork. The activity encouraged imagination and learning through experimentation while cultivating concepts of waste reduction, efficient resource use, and environmentally responsible lifestyles in line with the “low-carbon world” concept.

Throughout the activity, the students were divided into five groups and rotated through five learning stations focused on extracting natural colors. They explored different processes for transforming natural materials and discarded resources into various forms of color before applying the knowledge and natural colors they created to produce “My Environmental Artwork from Nature Around Me.” The program concluded with a knowledge-sharing session and the presentation of certificates to the participants before they returned to school.

The activity was part of the Carbon Neutrality Campus (CNC) project, which aims to disseminate knowledge on greenhouse gas emission reduction and carbon neutrality. It seeks to help young learners understand that reducing waste, using resources efficiently, and repurposing discarded materials are among the approaches that can help reduce environmental impacts and support the transition toward a low-carbon society.

Furthermore, the activity serves as a model initiative that can be expanded to educational institutions within the CNC network and to wider society. Through the dissemination of knowledge and the cultivation of awareness about greenhouse gas reduction among young people and the public, the initiative contributes to Thailand’s efforts toward sustainable development.

The activity was designed to encourage students to learn through hands-on experimentation, ask questions, think creatively, and understand that reducing waste and using natural resources efficiently can contribute to addressing global warming and protecting the environment. It also lays a foundation for young people to develop knowledge and positive attitudes toward environmental protection in the future.

The activity was supported by funding from the Planning Division, Mahidol University, to promote the application of scientific and environmental knowledge in creating meaningful learning experiences for young people and communities. The initiative ultimately aims to strengthen environmental awareness, support greenhouse gas emission reduction, and contribute to sustainable development.
