Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies

Mahidol University, Thailand

6 – 27 November 2019

Course Title:

Waste Management and Wastewater Treatment for Sustainability

Duration

            6 – 27 November 2019

Background and Rational

Currently, increasing in population, advanced technology, social and economic development is causing a rise of pollution such as waste and wastewater. At the same time the methods of pollution prevention and waste management in developing countries are still slowly developed.  Inappropriate management of waste and wastewater is an immediate solution to cope with the tremendous amount of waste generated and the consequences of it causes major problem among these countries. Dumping waste in vacant lands or discharge of untreated wastewater directly into the rivers have caused many environmental and health effects.  The pollutants and toxic substances released from the illegal dumping sites can contaminate the land, groundwater and surface water nearby.  Also the pollutants in wastewater can harm the aquatic lives.  And this would have adverse health effects to the receptors in the vicinity area of the dumping sites and along the rivers.   The scale of these problems is not limited only to the local level but to the global level as well.  The uncontrolled emission of greenhouse gases from the degradation of organic substances in waste and wastewater such as methane and carbon dioxide is one of the major concerned in global warming issue.

Municipal solid waste management and wastewater treatment have been active areas of study, research and teaching of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies. Thailand has made large steps in improving the management in the past decade.  For these reasons the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies intends to organize a training program in Waste Management and Wastewater Treatment for Sustainability.  This program will provide an understanding of the principles underlining effective waste management from generation, collection, transport, reuse, recycle and disposal and also the technology for wastewater collection and treatment.  In addition the transformation of organic substances in waste and wastewater to the energy recovery is included in this program. The course will rely on the expertise that the Faculty has gained through hands on research and also on the experience of Thailand over the last decade in tackling this issue. State of the art waste management and wastewater treatment techniques will be disseminated and the current challenges faced will also be debated. It is expected that this program based on practical experiences in Thailand will be of use to participants in the future.

Objectives

1.    To introduce the concepts and principles knowledge of municipal solid waste management and wastewater treatment technologies

2.    To enhance practical knowledge, technology and skills via the site visits
